All-new subcompact is fun, inexpensive and practical. introductionsubcompact cars are not the penalty boxes they once were. A raft of totally models brings comfort and happy motoring at bargain prices. Honda, toyota, nissan and chevrolet have launched new subcompacts for 2007, while kia and hyundai barely beat them to the party with new models for 2006. They come with wacky names like fit, yaris, versa, aveo, rio and accent. For the most part, they're all delightful, get excellent gas mileage, offer comfortable, reliable transportation, and are highly space efficient. There's not a bad one in the bunch.  the honda fit distinguishes itself with agile handling, zippy performance, and impressive practicality. It's a particularly pleasant car for running errands. It's easy to get in and out. The rear seatbacks can be flipped down to create a big, flat cargo hold. Most of the other cars in this class don't offer such a big, flat floor, and that's crucially important when trying to transport a big box. Alternatively, the seat bottoms can be flipped up, creating a nice cargo hold behind the front seats, handy for groceries and errand running or for tall items, like framed art. Recline the front seats and they form a couch. It retails just below $14,500. Even more compelling is the sport model, which adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a nice stereo, sporty styling cues, and the all-important keyless remote for less than $1,400. Adding to its sensibility, the fit comes standard with six airbags and anti-lock brakes. And it looks like fun. The fit presents a smart ambience, especially a sport model swathed in vivid blue pearl, milano red or blaze orange metallic paint to highlight its massive and colorful headlamp assemblies. lineupthe honda fit is available in two trim levels, the base fit 13,850) and the sport 15,170). It also comes with three-point safety belts for all positions with tensioners for the front seats. Latch child-seat tethers are provided in both rear outboard seats, while the center seat has a built-in, ready-to-use upper tether, allowing child safety seats to be installed in any rear seating location. The fit comes standard with abs and electronic brake-force distribution to help drivers avoid crashes in the first place. walkaroundthe honda fit was designed to offer an active and smart appearance and we think it succeeds. It's aerodynamically sleek and is engineered to make efficient use of interior space.  the interesting headlight bezels match the exterior color of the vehicle. Standard on all models, this body-colored headlight bezel gives the fit a sporty appearance. The doors have three distinct detents to hold the door open at various degrees.  unique among subcompacts, the fit mounts its fuel tank in the center of the car, under the front seats. This allows the floor for the back-seat passengers to be lower, thus increasing space behind the front seats.  the unit-body structure is highly rigid, which is helpful for developing crisp handling response and a smooth ride quality. Stuctural rigidity is also useful for protecting the people inside and honda expects top ratings from the government and insurance industry. Honda achieved strength while keeping weight down by using high-strength steel. A honda fit sport with a manual gearbox weighs 2,471 pounds. That's comparable for the class and considerably lighter than a nissan versa. interiorthe honda fit is comfortable front and back and the interior can be quickly configured to carry big boxes or tall items. All in all, it's a great cabin.  the front seats are supportive, even sporty, far better than what's usually found in subcompacts. The front seats have lots of seat travel, so short and tall people fit in the fit. All models have the same fabric upholstery and it's nice. The seats are done up in an attractive two-tone design that cleverly matches up when the seats are fully reclined. The fabric itself appears nicer and more durable than that of the nissan though not quite as nice as that of the scion xa. The drivers gets lots of headroom, 40. 6 inches, which is as good or better than the other cars in this class, lots of legroom, nearly 42 inches, and hip room, both comparable to the other cars in the class, though the versa is a standout in hip room with its giant front seats.  the back seats are impressively roomy, given the size of the car, and surprisingly comfortable. We put three adults back there for a short drive to lunch and all three were quite content. There's lots of headroom front and rear.  even more impressive are the cargo-carrying options. This makes the fit better for a dog or anything else that benefits from a flat floor without pitfalls. The kia rio5 is also impressive with nearly 50 cubic feet. There's more: fold the rear seatbacks down, then lift the seatbottoms up again. The trunk area is back to the way it was with the seats up, but a big cargo area is now revealed behind the front seats. Leaving the seat behind the driver in this position might be quite useful for grabbing groceries and running errands.  and that's not all! Honda calls this the relaxation mode. It would work well at a drive-in theater if they still existed. It would also be useful when stopping in a rest area for snooze on a long drive, much safer than trying to drive when sleepy.  visibility from the driver's seat is good, with good mirrors and a panoramic windshield, though there's a bit of a blindspot. The fit has a comfortable steering wheel. All of the switchgear (headlights, wipers, power windows, etc.) works well. The center dash is logical.  audio controls are easy to operate. We liked the giant volume knob and the big buttons for the selecting am/. driving impressionthe easygoing nature of the honda fit is even more apparent underway. The engine is smooth and responsive, shifting is easy and it rides nicely.  the fit gets good gas mileage, achieving an epa-estimated 33/38 mpg city/highway with the manual gearbox and. A rugged suv that can pass for a luxury vehicle. introductionin the past, it was an either/or deal when considering the gmc or chevrolet sport-utilities: blazer and envoy (jimmy) were pretty much the same. But when gm reinvented its midsize suvs for 2002, it made a market-based decision to make the gmc distinct.  the new gmc envoy does use the same chassis and powerful new inline six-cylinder engine as the chevy trailblazer, but after that there are many significant differences, most notably the body styling, interior, and available air suspension. Body-color moldings come with sle and brushed nickel with slt. Inside, the sle gets cloth seats and splashes of that brushed nickel on the console and instrument panel, while the slt gets leather and wood with nickel trim rings. The driver gets an eight-way power adjustable seat with sle; both driver and passenger with slt. Seat position memory (including the heated outside mirrors) is standard on the slt and heated seats are optional; neither are available with sle. Slt also adds headlamp washers, driver information center, travelnote digital recorder, rain-sensing wipers, light-sensitive outside mirrors with turn signals, and more controls on the steering wheel.  sle and slt come with the same radio/cd sound system, with the slt including rear seat jacks and controls. Despite the size increase, its turning circle is 36. 4 feet, nearly six feet tighter than before. This is thanks to a new front suspension and the narrower inline engine.  among the three new gm midsize suvs (olds bravada and chevy trailblazer), the envoy's styling may be the most sophisticated. It's 'logical and precise,' says gmc's brand manager. It has a wide-mouth black grille that says (in ruby red) gmc all the way. Sleek and clean are the distinct headlamps, round foglights and front bumper with a wide slim slit at the very bottom. Envoy dispenses with the trailblazer's showy fender flares, by housing the standard 17-inch wheels (shod with specially developed michelins) inside hefty fenders which are part of a trapezoidal design theme. Strong beveled shapes extend along the envoy's clean sides and around the wheelwells, and help make the envoy look imposing. Under that hood, the inline engine is the big new thing. Jeep cherokee has been using a less sophisticated i6 for years, while bmw and lexus have very sophisticated versions in high-performance sedans. Advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing methods now enable an inline engine to soar, and for 2002 gm has fully exploited this technical opportunity.  the new vortec 4200 is an all-aluminum, double-overhead cam, 24-valve inline-6 with variable valve timing. It features electronic throttle control, an electrical system using silicon circuit boards (replacing some 1100 feet of copper wire), coil-on-plug ignition (thus no plug wires), and a seven-quart oil pan with a clever tunnel for the front drive axle, which allows the longish block to be mounted six inches lower, contributing to better balance and a lower center of gravity.  the chassis rails are shaped by hydroforming, a process pioneered in the '97 c5 corvette that makes the rails stronger and lighter. No less than eight crossmembers contribute to a claimed 260 percent increase in torsional rigidity, and there are 12 tuned body mounts made of urethane.  attention to detail is evident, from a battery box that draws in cooling air, to remarkably sanitary wiring under the hood, to a seven-pin receptacle for towing trailers with brakes, to rear-seat headrests that conveniently flip down for better rearward driver visibility. Switching in and out of 4wd can be done on the fly with a flip of the switch, although the vehicle must be in neutral to engage or disengage 4lo.  there is an optional load-leveling air suspension intended to provide a more luxurious ride. It uses a silent air compressor, which yields one small fruit: a 22-foot air hose for filling everything from tires to toys. It attaches to a small valve in a compartment in the cargo area. interiorall envoys seat five passengers, compared to the ford explorer's optional seven seats on a nearly identical wheelbase, with its third row of seats squeezed in. A seven-seat envoy with longer wheelbase is in the works. Working with a vehicle width that exceeds the explorer by 2. 5 inches, the envoy's rear seats offer slightly less shoulder room but 3. 8 inches more total hip room.  we tested the envoy at the same time we tested the trailblazer, and one clear difference was in the comfort of the seats. The envoy's seat cushions are longer, wider and thicker than those on the trailblazer, and offer noticeably more side bolstering-in fact, we would choose an envoy over a trailblazer just for the seats. The slt's leather was way plush, while the sle's cloth was grippier. A big tachometer is on the left, speedometer in center, and on the right are smaller gauges for water, battery, gas and oil. The brushed nickel trim looks classy, with or without the wood. The emergency brake lever is also located there. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, though none in the rear doors. Standard behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor, a cargo net, scrolling tonneau cover and power outlet.  the overhead console includes a sunglasses holder, plus the slt's travelnote digital recorder, which might be considered an important safety feature, as it allows the driver to orally take phone numbers while on a cellphone. The heating and air conditioning can be controlled separately by the driver, front and rear passengers.  interior lights abound, including reading lights. Gm calls the interior lighting 'world class,' developed by the rensselaer polytechnic institute lighting research center in indiana.  the standard sound system is a radio/cd, but optional are a radio/cd/cassette, radio with six-disc in-dash cd, or six-speaker 275-watt bose system. All the systems include rds (radio data systems) technology, allowing the listener to search for stations by type, display information including song and artist information, and provide traffic and weather updates.  the onstar communications system is standard. It incorporates state-of-the-art engine construction and management, and its 16/21 mpg city/highway mileage improves on gm's v6. From 4. 2 liters, the inline-6 produces a dazzling 270 horsepower, 30 more than ford explorer's new 4. 6-liter sohc v8. And it has a very broad torque curve peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 5 less than the ford and coming 400 rpm sooner. Ninety percent of the peak torque is there at 1600 rpm-and still there at 5600 rpm. According to the engine's designer, ron kociba, there's another 30 horsepower to be had just by adding dual exhausts.  general motors introduced the envoy, trailblazer and bravada in baja in december. We got about 100 miles of driving on rough and fast mexican two-lanes-flat and climbing, straight and twisting-and maybe eight la. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases.  the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750.  standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.  xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage.  the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500.  the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Seat side air bags, an new adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, a passenger classifier in the seat, and the tpms. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well.  the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides.  ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires.  this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested.  the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. The standard for suvs is completely redesigned. introductionthe introduction of the all-new jeep grand cherokee represents a bold move by daimlerchrysler. Yet its proportions are completely different from before, with more steel and less glass, a laid-back windshield, the trademark giant wheel well flares, and a slickly angular body without the cladding of the previous generations; just one small spear. The d-pillar has been laid forward, which cuts into cargo space, but it sure looks cool. It's got a replaceable chin spoiler on it, and it looks mean. Inside, it's got nearly 70 cubic feet of storage and three modern, if not brand-new, powerplants.  interior materials are dramatically improved over the previous model's, which left much to be desired. The atmosphere inside the new grand cherokee is light, comfortable, and more enveloping than the previous model, more bolted in than hanging on from the driver's perspective, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around the relatively slim posts, and all the switches and controls clearly labeled and easy to find and use.  for the first time, a jeep can be married to the engine that put chrysler back on the map, the 5. 7-liter hemi. It's particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. However, we found the 4. 7-liter v8 worked great. The standard v6 is a vast improvement over jeep's old inline-6. A new suspension gives the grand cherokee much better handling, leaning less in corners, along with better ride quality. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good when driving off road or in crowded parking lots.  jeep engineers have come up with a larger, edgier and more macho suv with an engine that's among the most powerful in the segment. This is after years of being afflicted with old, weak engines and saddled with a small cargo compartment. lineupjeep grand cherokee comes in two models, laredo and limited. The basic laredo comes standard with a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6 and a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 or 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is available for both laredo and limited. Side curtain air bags are optional.  a dynamic handling system (dhs) is available as part of the quadra-drive ii 4x4 system on late-2005 hemi models. Dhs reduces body roll, or lean, when cornering, resulting in sportier handling. An electronic stability program (esp) is also available, and comes packaged with the hemi.  options include gps navigation built into the radio 1,200), a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, a trailer tow package 255), boston acoustics audio, uconnect hands-free communication system 275), smart beam headlamps that sense the available natural light and adjust accordingly, and rear park assist 1,200). It's coupled with new lighter, more compact and more precise power rack-and-pinion steering that's reasonably quick and accurate, and nicely weighted. There seemed to be a more flatfooted, glued-down attitude with this big jeep, with far less body roll than the previous model, which had a bit of body roll built into it that paid some comfort dividends off-road. This one is just as comfortable on- and off-road without it.  front suspension travel is increased by almost 10 percent over the previous grand cherokee, and the new steering geometry yields a tighter turning circle, which counts heavily off road. A new five-link rear suspension combined with the new steering and new front suspension produced a boulevard ride, and cornering prowess, like no other jeep in history, an enormous improvement. We don't usually go around flinging 4500-pound suvs into corners, but this one invited a little bad behavior, which was very rewarding within the limits of its tires.
